NOTE: This passage of Romans has perhaps more divergent interpretations than any other part of this letter of Paul's. However, to read it in context with the Bible Numeric paragraphing and section structure presented by Dr. Ivan Panin helps greatly. Romans 1-4 points out the absolute necessity of “Repentance” and “Faith” before approaching chapters 5-8. Chapter 5 lays the foundation of “Redemption” based on the “Finished Work” of Christ. Chapter 6 points out our need of “identification” with Christ in His death and burial. But what is Paul's problem in Romans 7? It is that the fullness of the “Peter Package” in Acts 2:38 has not yetbeen realized.
The Jewish people of Peter's day asked him how to be saved in the light of their discovery that they had agreed with their leaders in having Jesus, the Son of God, crucified. And here Peter gives 2 conditions and one promise.
Seekers after Salvation mustmeet the two conditions of “repentance” and “baptism;” and then press on to receive the “gift” (do-reA) of the Holy Spirit. 3000 accepted Peter's challenge of all 3 parts of this package on the Day of Pentecost.
It is this “gift” that is laid out in Romans 8.The “Indwelling Spirit of Christ” is the secret of victory. Too many stop at meeting the first 2 conditions, but fail to press into the promise that George Muller, Rees Howells, Oswald Chambers and Paul experienced. It is the gift, the do-reA, that brings us out of the slough of despond of Romans 7, and places us into “identification” with Christ in His Resurrection! To stop at Romans 5 and 6 is to stay in a frustration of life that falls far shortof the design of God on our behalf.
To have this experience requires identification with Jesus' death through “baptism” in Romans 6.
It is my faith to believe that the “Greek Interlinear Bible Numeric Outlined New Testament” prepared by Ivan Panin 100 years ago, will be God's aid in these last days to usher believers into full spiritual marriage with Jesus. Spiritual marriage is notconsummated till Romans 8 has been received and experienced. Then, in the words of Peter Marshall, former Chaplain of the US Senate, we can enter the “Halls of Highest Human Happiness!”
John Bunyan in Pilgrim's Progress thoroughly understood this. The Apostle Paul clearly enunciates it! Come then, let none of us fail to get out of Romans 7 and into Romans 8! J.A.W.
